Search Engine Optimization

First page search result performance with proper SEO.

WHAT IS SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or unpaid search results. This is often to referred to as "organic rankings", as opposed to paid search results ad placement.

There are millions of new web pages coming online each day. Competition to reach the top of the page, or even page one, of search results is now a highly competitive market requiring specialists and continued focus to get and keep your business on that first page. Google currently captures about 85% of all search engine traffic (as of 9-23-10). They use over 200 metrics in their algorithm which determines who gets top placement on their search results based on a specific keyword phrase.

HOW DO PEOPLE SEARCH?

There are three types of searches:

  1. Navigational - Find a web page, a company.
  2. Informational - Find answer to a question.
  3. Transactional - Need to buy something.

It is crucial to know WHAT your customer are searching for and HOW they are searching for it, i.e.,  the keywords and phrases they are using, and then build content around those keyword phrases. By following these "rules", your site can appear in the Google index within days of updating.

HOW OFTEN IS SEO NEEDED?

A popular phrase among SEO professionals is, "Content is king." In other words, regular updates to your website content tells the search engines that this a high-quality website, and give it priority over websites which don't update their content. Updating a single page with a paragraph or two of text each week can be sufficient to keep your website on the top of SERPs (search engine result pages).

SEO practices should be done when initially planning and designing a web site, but can be performed after a web site is live. Often this requires a complete analysis of the current state of the site, where each area of web site is scored on it's SEO effectiveness, and a suggested plan of action is then presented.
